an episode at the bank

There is a trend in banks for an employee to walk up or down the line asking people if they would like to use the fast deposit drop box instead of queueing. This morning I voiced the thoughts that usually just swirl around in my head as the bright and cheerful bank employee approached. When she asked if there was anything she could do to help today I looked up and said "Well yes there is. You could go and open one of those two empty windows and speed up the service."

"I'm sorry" she replied "but we don't have any trained staff, that could do that job, here at the moment."

Had I continued the next comment was fermenting along the lines of 'the bank can afford to pay you to stand by the queue and direct people to the fast deposit option but does not have enough people in place to do the job that action is replacing?' but instead I backed down. For now.. .. ..

I handed a wodge of notes to a bank clerk and asked her to count them for me. It was about 2 grand in tenners, but I hadn't had time to count it. This was many years ago, before Gordo ruined the economy. She informed me that she wasn't allowed to count the money, only check what I had written on the paying-in slip. I argued for a while with her, smarmy, you know the sort. In the end I grabbed the pen on the end of the chain and wrote £7.50 on it, then asked her if she wouldn't mind checking my calculations as I wasn't sure if I had counted correctly.
