To influence the development of services by developing a database on good practice/guidelines.Why take any notice of them? They've just released the results of a survey into alcohol and older women (pdf) which has some interestingly worded questions and also interesting results. 251 people responded to the survey which is not statistically significant but the results are published with lots of graphs to illustrate the responses.

Question 1 asks
How often do you drink alcohol?20% responded never, 6% responded with every day. The other choices were special occasions (whatever that means), once a month or less, 2-4 times per month or more than once per week.
Question 6 asks
How many drinks does it take for you to feel the effects of alcohol?without asking specifics such as size or ABV of the drinks in question. The results then are based on a vague measure. What constitutes one drink? A pint of Stella has twice the alcohol content of a half pint of Stella, but if you are drinking halves then for the survey it appears you are drinking twice as much.
Question 9 asks
Who do you drink with?without a question asking about living arrangements. Drinking alone is often considered a sign of 'problem drinking' but if you live alone there is a higher chance that you might drink alone through circumstance rather than choice.

"1 in 4 women drink more than the recommended daily amount. ". Not surprised since their recommended daily ration is ridiculously low.
"3 out of 4 15 year old girls have ben drunk at least once"; no change there in thirty years then.
" It is recommended that pregnant women drink no alcohol at all "; this advice varies now and then but all the pregnant women I have known got this message years ago.
