In the
previous post I quoted from the comments made by Canadian finance minister Jim Flaherty and his reaction to Gordon's proposal for Tobin taxes. He said quite bluntly
"We are not in the business of raising taxes, we are in the business of lowering taxes in Canada. It is not an idea we would look at."
Looking at the
BBC coverage of this story, Headlined "
Lukewarm reaction to UK tax plan" they twice quote Mr Flaherty as saying
"not an idea we would look at".
which diminishes the impact and strength of the rebuttal of the idea. No prizes for guessing why they only included the partial quote.

The latest Beeb page is entitled "Mixed response to transaction tax idea" and regarding Tim Geithner's views they say:
"US Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner was asked about the tax and insisted on showing what he called "due deference to his host" in Scotland.
So, he didn't dismiss the idea outright but nor did he offer even a hint of support."
A bit different to what he apparently told Sky News.
