Householders who recycle could earn £130 a year in shopping vouchers under plans to be unveiled by shadow chancellor George Osborne. We've had a government for the last 12 years that fails to understand that there are two parts to the 'carrot and stick' method of encouragement so the promise of rewarding desired behaviour patterns is a positive step. However .. .. .. I'd rather see a reduction in council tax rather than 'shopping vouchers' being offered as inducement. I wonder how that sits with the proposed bribery legislation?
A scheme to encourage recycling which was piloted in Windsor and Maidenhead will be extended across the country. The trial has boosted recycling by 30%, the Conservatives say, and this would save cash being used for landfill taxes.

I would have covered this, but I ran out of energy. They will be worse than the other lot, just you mark my words.
Domestic refuse collection just is not an issue, it doesn't cost much about £100 - £200 per household per year or something. Of course a bit of separating your rubbish into 'stuff that rots', 'stuff that burns', glass, metal and 'really poisonous stuff' is all good stuff, but the overall economic or environmental benefits are marginal.
And which supermarkets will be favoured with the running of these voucher schemes?
My thoughts too JuliaM, illegal subsidy for Sainsbury/Halfords/PC World ? ( In reality the vouchers would probably only be redeemable at the local muesli shop or Cyclorama ).
