
Electric cars should be fitted with a small Swiss cowbell to warn pedestrians they are approaching because of their quiet engines, it has been suggested. The call by Lord McColl, a Tory peer, follows fears that the cars' engines - which are almost ___________ at low speeds - pose a safety risk.

I've got a better idea. How about an mp3 player and speaker in the front grille that can play a selection of car engine noises.

I read about this a while back in relation to Japan where uptake of electric cars is expected to rise sharply.
