I've never really understood how political journalism works, the cosy association with ministers, journalists jostling to be in the best position, why sometimes ministers are exposed but other times things are covered up.

I've always thought it strange how a minister can persuade a journalist to bury it, or just sit on it for a while in exchange for a helping hand later on, maybe even total access for an exclusive one to one session.

They may not agree with many of his policies but even the Tunbridge Wells set must be impressed by the stamina of Alistair Darling. Kevin Maguire obviously is.
