victory?

"Look how brilliant we are" gushes Science and Innovation Minister Lord Drayson in a press release that was embargoed until 00:01 Jan 1st 2010. "We managed to negotiate with the EU to allow us to keep these vital measures under British control."

"Of course, if we hadn't signed the Lisbon Treaty we may well have been able to decide to keep imperial measures for ourselves without having to go to the bother of negotiating an exception from the EU. Hopefully no-one will notice that."

Difficult to tell whether this is a joke or not. As you say turgid Brown should never have put us in this position in the first place. Of course it is only because Europe does not want us to get upset about something that we feel strongly about but is not really important, in contrast to them ratcheting up their power in other areas.
