withheld

I may have been a bit hasty in taking the piss out of Billy Bragg a couple of weeks ago. This admission comes as a shock as much to me as it does to you. The thing is I now think he might just have a point.

If every self-employed person who disagreed with one policy decision of the government withheld their tax payment then it would bankrupt the country by, ooooh, 11am tomorrow morning.

Transport, the NHS, global warming, schools, crime, alcohol, anti-social behaviour, politicians expenses, the war on smokers, Iraq, Afghanistan. Take your pick.

It's a right old can of worms that Billy has opened up. Could the actions of a such a vocal supporter of Labour actually bring about the downfall of a Labour government if enough people take up the idea?

No.

If you put three Brits in a brewery, they would spend fifteen hours discussing the wall paper, and leave with twenty different opinions on the colour of the paint on the cieling, and not one of them would have a bottle opener with them.

To get the Brits to do anything as a group is like trying to teach a gang of cats to march in step.

FT - the beauty is that there doesn't need to be any consensus. Everyone could pick their own reason for not paying taxes.

Billy Bragg chose bankers bonuses. What reason would you choose?

Interestin question.

Failure to let our army and navy act like an army and navy would be one, I guess.

If they do not get involved in the war in Afghanistan or sinking pirate ships in the Indian Ocean, why should I pay for them?

But how do you refuse to pay tax with PAYE?

O.K not go to work, I can see that. But you are harming yourself more than you are them.

Then again, I like a person with principals, and is willing to put his money where his mouth is.

What is really needed is for all employers to say "I will pay my employees this month WITHOUT taking the tax out first".

I agree that employees on PAYE can't take the option of not paying taxes but the self-employed can, not just now but also for the July payment.

It might be interesting if Brown actually manages to win a leadership election .. .. ..
