when is a cigarette not a cigarette?

When it's counted as TWO cigarettes for tax and duty purposes!
From January 1 next year, any cigarette longer than 8cm – excluding the tip – will be treated as another cigarette and have extra duty slapped imposed on it. For each additional 3cm, or part thereof, it will be treated as yet another cigarette.
Oh for fucks sake

Clever.

The Marlboro Red (standard size) is 8.1mm INCLUDING the tip.

I can't believe I've just done that.

I suppose they were thinking that someone might invent the four foot fag. Wish I'd thought of it.

... and infringe Elton John's patent?

Bastard. I had nearly finished Googling for a short one. Most are taller than you'd think.

@Uncle Marvo - I think the regulations are for the length of the tobacco section of a fag so normal king size will be ok. 100's and superkings might fall foul of the new tax and anything longer than that definitely will.

It'll be interesting to see if there is an upper maximum length for taxation or if the four foot fag (I only smoke one per day) will become a reality .. .. ..

That puts an end to my 16 skin joints going through customs then.

Desperate Times Call for desperate measures !

.....and just how will any of this typical NuLieBore fiddling around the edges stop the continued rise in the amount of legal importing of standard tobacco and cigarettes from our French and Belgian neighbours?

Not one jot.

So as the pound crashes and UK duty continues to increase making local purchases even less attractive, the cross-Channel flow turns into a flood and UK duty takings fall and fall.

I always wondered why the state never took advantage of that. Marly 100s are (sorry, were) the same cost as regulars. Yet more baccy.

Oh well, another thing stomped on.

JD

100's are longer, but thinner. Same tobacco by weight.

JD and IanPJ - can either of you measure the length of a 100s or superking not including the filter? That's the critical measurement it seems. Less than 8cm and nothing will change

It's going to cost me a fortune in Channel tunnel fares. But hey Ho, It will be worth it to screw the treasury out of all that tax that they were getting from me,
