“Where I want to try and help is ending the deep discounting on alcohol - people going and “preloading”, having bought from a supermarket where they were attracted by a price designed to bring them into the store."The other way to approach the issue is to reduce the tax burden on pubs so that they can bring their prices down and make pre-loading less financially attractive. But that's never going to happen, is it?

a change of government, a change of ideas?
The Telegraph reports comments by the Prime Minister who seems to have the same attitude towards alcohol taxation as the previous Prime Minister.

Of course, the next step once the prices go up in the Super Markets is that people will brew their own. I've just another batch of 46 pints at the princely sum of £12 (OK there is some initial outlay). The local brew shop are also doing Stills for making your own spirits, about £200 outlay then about £4 a bottle thereafter. I'm not convinced of the legality though, I believe it's legal to own a still, just not to use it, can anybody clarify? http://www.wineworks.co.uk/department/still-spirits/
Pubs are going to be shafted in the next 18months. Why? Because we in the trade can't get our act together and organise any counter to all this. We're too disparate
Same old 'avoid the difficult decisions and slap on a blanket ban' mentality.
If people are getting off their face before going to a pub, then surely they shouldn't be served? Doesn't existing law cover this?
But noooooo, we'll punish the people who need to stock up for a party, as well as those abusing the cheap booze opportunities - that'll show we're the party of self-responsibility!

Still probably illegal under EU rules I think. I wonder how they are going to prevent cross border shopping - e.g. everyone in Manchester starts buying booze (and everything else) in Macclesfield...
Didnt Ireland get slapped down in May by the EU when they tried to impose minimum pricing for tobacco? So I can't see this one getting the EU seal of approval either.
As JuliaM says, why are we using a shotgun to kill a whole crowd of entirely responsible drinkers instead of rifle to shoot the numptie who gets pissed and makes a nuisance of him/herself?
Plod has all the laws they need, they just refuse to get off their arses, out of their nice warm cars or up from behind their desks and actually nick the little buggers. No brownie points in it, I suppose.
@ John R
Get PC Correct off his arse and walking the beat again. No need for asbo awards, shotgun laws or more hassle for licensees. We've recently had two fights on our doorstep (in the street). NONE of the parties involved had stepped inside the pub. They'd been drinking elsewhere. Try telling the local papers that! MW will agree - we're a real ale no-swearing kind of place. Yet we're the one's getting tarnished!
Yes Eddie86 you do have a real ale no swearing town centre kind of place (and it's very nice too!!) and yes I can imagine that any alcohol related incidents near to your premises will be blamed on you whether you are responsible or not.
It's happened many times to the pub across the road from my business. Drunk people misbehaving near the pub *must* be as a result of that pub .. .. .. no need to investigate .. .. case closed.. .. nothing to do with it being the only taxi rank in the town or the mainline railway station .. ..
