zero tolerance

So this bunch of authoritarian overlords are pretty much the same as the previous bunch of authoritarian overlords then? Nothing much has changed at all going by the language emanating from the Transport Select Committee reports into drink driving legislation.
In the long term, we believe that the Government should aim for an "effectively zero" limit of 20mg/100ml but we acknowledge that is too great a step at this stage. Instead of an "interim" reduction to 50mg/100ml, the Government should concentrate on working with individual police forces to achieve a stricter enforcement of the current limit and beginning a public education campaign to help achieve public acceptance of a 20mg/100ml limit.
So we are going to force something on you that will restrict your freedom of choice, destroy rural pubs, create more criminals and fines revenue but before we do that we're going to 'educate' you into wanting it?

Looking at the most recent data available to the committee we find that 85% of killed drivers obey the current law while 11% just don't give a shit about themselves or the people around them.

While the rest of the EU pootles around in their cars with much lower alcohol they must be a lot safer than in the UK mustn't they? Well no. Here in the UK we have among the lowest number of traffic fatalities per head of population in the EU even though we currently have the highest blood alcohol limit. We also have the most draconian enforcement regime which the nannies wish to keep in place after we have fallen in line with the EU limit. Just as with the indoor smoking ban we lead the way in authoritarian enforcement of EU directives. Welcome to Great Britain land of the free.

"Public education campaign" means propaganda. Someone higher up already decided, now everyone must be forced to agree and ridiculed, driven outside the gates of the city, threatened by force, held up for example or burned at the stake in order to make the "campaign" "a success" that talking heads on TV can drone on about one year out.

You have it spot on, MW.

When other countries are doing better than us in any particular field, we are told we have to change in order to be like them. When we are out-performing other countries, as in this case ... we are told we must change to be, err, more like them. But with more threats and intimidation.

Our government has been at war with us for the past ten years.

It's always struck me as scarey that 3/4 of killer drivers are stone cold sober.
It is true that in much of Europe the permitted level of alcohol is lower than that of the UK but their punishments are far less severe, usually a fine rather than loss of driving licence.

Hey banned.

The thing that strikes me from reading the minutes of the select committee is that they want to bring us in line with the rest of the EU for the alcohol limit but retain the harsher punishments that already exist. Wankers that they are .. .. ..

Hypocrisy that's called.

As well as pointing out that UK traffic-related fatalities are the lowest in Europe, we might also reflect on the fact that at 3,300 deaths a year the roads are considerably less lethal than Hospital Acquired Infections at 8,800 per year.

Strangely I see no political grandstanding encouraging initiatives which would penalise Health (ahem) Service staff for permitting this situation to continue.

Perhaps I missed it earlier?
