the finest brains of a generation

From The Argus
A halls of residence had to be evacuated after a student smoked a cigarette under a smoke detector.

More than 70 people were had to leave Lancaster House in the University of Sussex about 3am today when the fire alarm sounded.

Crews from Preston Circus fire station said the matter would be dealt with by university staff.
I know it was cold last night but YOU SHOULD HAVE LEANED OUT OF THE FUCKING WINDOW.

Is a students room in a halls of residence his private dwelling space? If so then smoking is surely not illegal.
As a Hall of Residence the fire service will have automatically sent out a minimum of two tenders and a ladder crew which is what they do here each time a student burns a piece of toast.

Halls near me have the usual "It is illegal to smoke within 5 metres of this notice", it is next to the main door and also next to the communal cigarette disposal unit, go figure.

Students are required to sign a residence agreement in which they agree not to do a great many things in their rooms. So a student's room is not really a 'private' space in any sense of the word.

I'd rather like to think this student was having a one-person protest. But probably not.

If you rent your home you do so on the terms specified by the landlord. No pets has been the rule in many places for decades, now it's no ciggies. Next it will be no chips. Then no salt. Then no meat.

Then, I hate to think what it might be.

All the more reason to own your own home.
