Sir Ian Gilmore

You would think that one of the most vociferous anti-alcohol campaigners would be able to defend their stance with a body of evidence that proved beyond doubt their positioning but not so
Sir Ian Gilmore, chairman of the Alcohol Alliance of concerned health bodies, said it was probably true that alcohol consumption had dropped slightly in the last few years, "but those who are drinking are probably drinking more".
Probably true that alcohol consumption has dropped? The statistics look fairly fucking compelling to me. Individuals are probably drinking more? Why don't you actually find out before giving quotes to the national media?

How did I guess that he's said something stupid simply by seeing the post title?

'Probably' is even less certain than the usual 'could' or 'may' ... it would seem they're floundering on this one. :)

Ta for the link, MW.

and now the pompous twat wants alcohol prices increased 2% above inflation as a measure to curb liver disease.

Fair enough to deter young people from liver damage and the cost of misuse of alcohol,(involving police, ambulance, courts etc etc). For older people who like a quiet drink at home it's grossly unfair and should be protested!!
