sunday morning quiz

To be able to keep the number plate when you use another car as a base for a kit car you have to keep 70% of the original parts. So what car was used as a base for this?

Bonus points if you can name the end result (hint: the man leaning over in the blue t-shirt is the head of the owner's club for the genuine article)

Could it be a Herald?

Allegedly, according to the V5, this is 70% Ford Escort.

And for the interested the kit is a Gemini Elva

Very interesting one, thanks MW.

Escort was actually my first thought when I read the post. Not because I know anything about the Gemini, or the Elva, but simply because it was such a popular choice as a base for kit cars a while back.
Any idea on the basis for the 70% - weight, cost, parts count etc?

Part count Chuckles.

The story goes that a man from the DVLA (?) turned up with a clipboard and checklist and the builders (the driver in the picture and his father) had to point out every original part that they had retained. After nearly two hours they were down to washer bottle, washer bottle lines, rubber grommits etc when the official stamped the sheet and declared it had passed.
